From willow marshes to a San Jose neighborhood
Willow Glen grew from two Mexican land grants, Rancho de los Coches and Rancho San Juan Bautista. Its name comes from the willows and cattails that filled the marshland between the Guadalupe River and Los Gatos Creek.
Residents incorporated Willow Glen as a city in 1927 to stop the Southern Pacific Railroad from running trains down Lincoln Avenue. In 1936 they voted to join San Jose, largely to connect to its sewer system.
Since 1950, many households have set out small trees strung with colored lights for the holidays, and each September the Founders’ Day parade travels down Lincoln Avenue.
The Roberto Adobe and the Suñol House
In 1836 Roberto Balermino, a Tamien Ohlone man, built an adobe house on land that Governor Manuel Micheltorena granted him in 1844 as the 2,219-acre Rancho de los Coches. In 1847 Spanish-born businessman Antonio Suñol took over the rancho as payment for a debt and built a brick house beside the adobe, reportedly the first brick house finished in Alta California. Suñol is remembered as the community's founder. The two buildings at 770 Lincoln Avenue became California Historical Landmark No. 898 in 1976 and were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Since August 2016 the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County have run them as a free museum.
The trestle over Los Gatos Creek
In 1922 the Western Pacific Railroad built a wooden trestle to carry its tracks over Los Gatos Creek in Willow Glen. Long after the trains stopped, neighbors fought for seven years to have it protected as a historic landmark, while the city wanted to replace it with a new bridge for the Three Creeks Trail. After an appeals court refused to block the project, crews began tearing it down in June 2020 to make way for a new pedestrian bridge on the trail.
Trees and lights
Robert and Arlene Cimino started the holiday tree tradition, and Frank Badagliacca Jr. carried it on; his wife Dolores added the white light at the top of each tree. Today the small lighted trees line more than 200 streets each December. From 1995 to 2018 the neighborhood also held Dancin' on the Avenue, a summer street party along Lincoln Avenue that stretched east to Minnesota Avenue.
A slower Lincoln Avenue
Lincoln Avenue once carried four lanes of traffic through downtown Willow Glen. In February 2015 the city began a pilot road diet between Minnesota Avenue and Willow Street, cutting it to one lane in each direction to slow traffic and make the street easier to cross on foot. The change drew heated debate from neighbors and shop owners on both sides. For a delivery to a shop or restaurant on the avenue, include the business name and the hours someone will be there.
Planning a Willow Glen delivery
For a home on one of the side streets off Lincoln Avenue, include a phone number in case the house number is hidden behind trees or a fence.
Deliveries run Monday through Saturday. For a birthday or anniversary that falls on a Sunday, choose Saturday. Your card message can be written in any language you like.
