New Almaden is named for Almadén in Spain, where mercury has been mined since Roman times. In 1845 Andrés Castillero found cinnabar, the ore of mercury, in these hills.
The New Almaden mines produced mercury for about 135 years, until Santa Clara County bought them in the 1970s and mining ended. New Almaden was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
Today the old mine lands form Almaden Quicksilver County Park, with more than 4,000 acres of trails, and Almaden Lake Park sits at the valley’s edge.
