A ridge shaped by redwoods, astronomy and Joaquin Miller
The Oakland Hills rise east of the city's flatter neighborhoods and open into a landscape of ridges, creeks and second-growth forest. Redwood Regional Park preserves a large stand of coast redwoods in the East Bay hills. Logging removed the original forest in the nineteenth century, and the trees visible today grew back around the historic cutting sites. The park's trails follow terrain that still makes local travel feel far removed from the city below.
Poet Joaquin Miller bought land in the hills in the 1880s and called his estate The Hights. He planted trees, built monuments and lived there until his death in 1913. The property became Joaquin Miller Park, where the Woodminster Amphitheater and hillside paths now share the landscape with the structures and story associated with Miller. The park gives the surrounding streets one of their strongest geographic reference points.
Chabot Space & Science Center traces its roots to an observatory founded in Oakland in 1883 and named for benefactor Anthony Chabot. Its modern Skyline Boulevard campus opened in 2000, placing telescopes, exhibits and science programs above the urban lights. Farther along the ridge, Skyline connects neighborhoods, schools and park entrances while offering broad views toward downtown Oakland, the Bay and San Francisco.
The panorama is beautiful, but the road network is practical only when a destination is precise. A hill address can sit above a retaining wall or behind a bend with little visible numbering.
