Parkland, streetcars, Victorian blocks, and the Summer of Love

Buena Vista Park was established in 1867 and is San Francisco’s oldest official park. Its hilltop paths and wooded slopes separate parts of Haight-Ashbury from the Castro and offer long views across the city.

Haight Street and Ashbury Street were named during nineteenth-century development. Streetcar service helped turn the area west of the older city into a residential district filled with closely spaced houses and apartment buildings.

Many neighborhood buildings survived the 1906 earthquake and fire because the main burned area stopped east of the district. The surviving Victorian and Edwardian streets became a defining part of Haight-Ashbury’s appearance.

In 1967, the Summer of Love drew young people, musicians and political movements to Haight-Ashbury. The period gave the intersection of Haight and Ashbury worldwide cultural recognition.

Cole Valley developed as a compact residential and shopping area around Cole Street, close to Kezar Stadium and the slopes below Parnassus Heights. Its cafes, schools and small businesses serve nearby homes.

The two neighborhoods share public transit, hills and historic housing while maintaining distinct daily rhythms. Haight Street carries heavier visitor activity, while Cole Street often feels more residential and locally focused.
