A valley town under the poplars
Alamo takes its name from the Spanish word for poplar or cottonwood. Bay Miwok people lived in the valley for thousands of years before Americans settled here in the mid-1800s.
John Jones became Alamo’s first postmaster in 1852.
Alamo is unincorporated and governed by Contra Costa County. About 15,300 people live here today.
