The area began as Ravenswood, a town founded on the bay shore in 1849. In the early 1900s Charles Weeks started a poultry colony called Runnymede here, and the Weeks neighborhood still carries his name.
After several failed attempts, residents voted to incorporate, and East Palo Alto became a city on July 1, 1983. It is one of the most diverse cities on the Peninsula, with large Latino, Pacific Islander and African American communities.
Cooley Landing, at the east end of Bay Road, opened as a city park in July 2012. Its education center and trails look out over the bay and the Ravenswood Open Space Preserve.
