From orchards to a fast-growing neighborhood
Berryessa is named for the Berryessa family, prominent Californios who once owned much of the area.
In the late 1800s it was farm country, with apricot and prune orchards and one of the valley’s largest fruit packing operations. Homes replaced most orchards in the 1960s and 1970s, though Orlando Farm lasted until 2013.
BART reached Berryessa in 2020, and the station area is growing quickly with new homes and apartments.
The flea market that started in 1960
In March 1960 George Bumb, Lawrence Headrick and Joe Kokes opened the Berryessa Flea Market, just east of where the San Jose Flea Market stands today. The site covers about 120 acres, with nearly eight miles of aisles and room for more than 2,000 vendors. In 1987 the market said it drew more than 4 million visitors a year, and its farmers market section still stretches about a quarter mile. A fire in 2006 destroyed 24 stands along Produce Row.
In August 2007 the city approved plans to build homes on part of the property. The northern area, once used for market parking, has since filled with new homes near the BART station, and a shopping center with a Safeway now stands at Berryessa and Sierra roads.
A 1927 schoolhouse and today's schools
The old Berryessa Elementary School, built in 1927 in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, was designed by architect W. H. Weeks. It has been used for businesses since 1983. Nearby Toyon Elementary closed after the 2024 to 2025 school year.
Today Berryessa has three public middle schools, Morrill, Piedmont and Sierramont, along with about ten elementary schools and Saint Victor Catholic School. For a teacher thank-you or an end-of-year celebration, include the school name, the teacher's full name and the time of the event.
Art and wine by Penitencia Creek
The Berryessa Art and Wine Festival is usually held in May at Penitencia Creek Park. It brings together about 120 to 150 artists' booths and 14 food booths. For an artist or volunteer working a booth, include the booth number or group name, the festival day and a phone number. We deliver Monday through Saturday, so if the festival runs on a weekend, plan the delivery for Saturday.
The creek itself was once called Arroyo de las Penitencia, after an adobe used as a house of confession in mission times, and the Ohlone name, Shistuk, is usually translated as place of rabbits. It runs about 11 miles from Poverty Ridge through Alum Rock Park and joins Coyote Creek at Berryessa Road. The Penitencia Creek Trail follows it through the park and ends at the Berryessa BART station, and in 2008 it became part of the Bay Area Ridge Trail. Steelhead trout still swim in the upper creek.
Where Berryessa begins and ends
Berryessa covers the northeast corner of San Jose. Landess Avenue marks its northern edge along Milpitas, and Mabury Road marks the southern border with Alum Rock. East of White Road, the line runs along Golf Drive. Most of the area is in City Council District 4, with a small unincorporated pocket that the county governs.
Two San Jose Public Library branches serve the neighborhood, the Berryessa Branch and the Educational Park Branch. For a librarian or volunteer, include the branch and the person's full name.
For a birthday, an anniversary or a new baby, add a short card message and the recipient's phone number. If the address is in one of the new buildings near the BART station, include the building name and unit number. Orders placed by 1:00 PM Pacific Time arrive the same day.
