El Cerrito's History
El Cerrito wasn't always El Cerrito. The town got its start after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, when refugees crossing the Bay settled in a small village that grew up around a blacksmith-turned-hardware store run by a German immigrant named Wilhelm Rust — and for its first several years, the town was actually named "Rust" after him. When it came time to incorporate in 1917, residents decided they didn't care for that name and renamed it El Cerrito — Spanish for "the little hill" — after nearby Albany Hill, whose silhouette had become the town's namesake landmark (even though the hill itself technically sits just across the border in Albany).
El Cerrito has kept reinventing itself since: it's been home to El Cerrito Plaza, one of the East Bay's original regional shopping centers, and, more famously, to Fantasy Records — the local label that recorded hometown band Creedence Clearwater Revival in the 1960s and 70s. Today it's a walkable, transit-connected community built around BART access and a genuine small-town Main Street feel along San Pablo Avenue.
