Neighborhoods range from older homes near downtown to gated communities in the hills. Many homes sit behind gates or on hillside streets. Include the gate code or call box name, the recipient’s phone and short directions if the house is hard to find.

A racetrack town on Main Street
Pleasanton was named in the 1860s, reportedly for Union general Alfred Pleasonton. A clerk’s spelling error gave the town its current name. It incorporated on June 18, 1894.
The racetrack at the fairgrounds was built in 1858 and is the oldest one-mile horse racing track in the United States. The Alameda County Fair has been held here since 1912.
About 80,000 people live in Pleasanton today, and the city is home to the headquarters of Workday.
The arch and the Women's Improvement Club
Two of downtown's best-known landmarks are the work of the Women's Improvement Club, founded in the spring of 1908. In December 1912 the club offered free land for a new town hall, on the condition that the city build it and include a public library. Voters passed a bond in February 1914, and the building opened in January 1915 at 603 Main Street. It served the city for 50 years, and since 1984 it has been the Museum on Main, run by the Amador-Livermore Valley Historical Society.
In 1932, during the Great Depression, the club paid $532 for the neon Pleasanton arch over Main Street, and the city paid for the poles. It was dedicated on March 8, 1932, and once carried police and fire horns on top. It is one of the few original gateway signs still standing in California.
Saloons, hardware and the movies
Pleasanton stayed unincorporated from 1862 until 1894. In 1888 the town had six saloons, and by 1907 it had seventeen. The Kolln Hardware building went up in 1890, and the store name was used there from 1933 until it closed in 2004. The 1917 silent film Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm was filmed in Pleasanton, and the Firehouse Arts Center, with its 221-seat theater, opened downtown in 2010.
The farmers market runs every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Angela Street between Main and First streets. For a vendor at the market, give us the stall name and a phone number, and for a Main Street shop, the business name and its opening hours.
Life at the fairgrounds
The Alameda County Fairgrounds cover about 270 acres, with a 3,000-seat amphitheater and a nine-hole golf course. A model train exhibit has run there since 1959, and the Scottish Highland Gathering has been held on the grounds since 1994. For an exhibitor, a performer or a volunteer at the fair, include their full name, the building or booth and the hours they will be there.
From 350 people to a business hub
Pleasanton had only about 350 residents in 1870 and about 18,300 by 1970. Its business boom began in the early 1980s, and the first three office buildings at Hacienda were finished in August 1983. Today the city's largest employers include Kaiser Permanente, the Pleasanton Unified School District, which was formed in 1988, Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley, Veeva Systems, Roche Molecular Diagnostics and Oracle. For an office delivery, include the company, the building and the recipient's full name.
The city has also become more diverse. Asian American residents made up about 12 percent of the population in 2000 and about 39 percent in 2020. Your card message can be written in any language you like.
Pleasanton sits about 350 feet above sea level, and summers can be very hot. The city once reached 115 degrees. On a hot day, tell us in the delivery notes if there is a shaded porch or a neighbor who can take the flowers inside. Order by 1:00 PM Pacific Time for same-day delivery, Monday through Saturday.
