From Ross Landing to Kentfield
The area was first known as Ross Landing. Albert Emmett Kent bought the property in 1871, and the railroad station was later renamed Kent. The name Kentfield came with the first post office in 1905.
MarinHealth Medical Center in Greenbrae opened in 1952 as Marin General Hospital. The College of Marin’s main campus is in Kentfield.
Kentfield and Greenbrae are unincorporated. About 6,800 people live in Kentfield.
James Ross, the Kents and Muir Woods
Long before Kentfield had its name, this land was part of Rancho Punta de Quentin. James Ross bought the rancho in 1857 and set up a trading post, and the area became known as Ross Landing. When Albert Emmett Kent bought land here in 1871, he built an estate he called Tamalpais. His son, William Kent, went on to serve in Congress and is remembered as the founder of Muir Woods. The family name stayed on the railroad station in the 1890s and on the post office that opened in 1905.
Kentfield sits on the eastern slopes of Mount Tamalpais, and many homes are on hillside lots or long driveways. A house number that can be seen from the street, a gate code and the recipient's phone number make these deliveries much easier.
College of Marin
The college opened on April 6, 1926, as Marin Junior College, with 87 students in its first class. It took the name College of Marin in 1948. The Kentfield campus at 835 College Avenue sits across from Kent Middle School. Its Fine Arts and Performing Arts buildings were built with a 2004 bond, and the college's theatre department is especially well known.
Opening nights, recitals and graduations at the college are popular times to send flowers. For a performer, give us the student's full name, the show and the curtain time, and tell us where the flowers should be left, such as the box office or a department office. For a faculty or staff member, include the department and building.
Greenbrae, Corte Madera Creek and the hospital
Greenbrae grew up after 1946, when 635 acres of farmland were bought for development. The Schultz Building Company, led by Niels Schultz and his son, built more than 1,000 homes and 1,500 apartments here. The neighborhood sits at the opening of the Ross Valley next to Highway 101, with Corte Madera Creek along its southern edge, and many homes look out over the creek.
MarinHealth Medical Center in Greenbrae is the main hospital and emergency center for central and southern Marin. For a patient, include the full name and room number if you know it. Fresh flowers and plants are usually welcome, but some units, such as intensive care, may not allow them, so it is a good idea to check with the family first.
Rainy winters, schools and Kentfield families
Kentfield gets some of the heaviest rain in the Bay Area, close to 48 inches in an average year. In winter, a covered porch or a note about where to leave the box keeps flowers dry if no one is home. A short note about a side door or a back porch helps too.
Marin Catholic High School, home of the Wildcats, opened in 1949 on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. For graduations there, or at Bacich Elementary and Kent Middle School, order a day or two early and tell us whether the flowers go to the school or the family home. For a funeral or memorial, send the service time, the church or funeral home and a family contact. Formal pieces go out on the morning route, and we can send a smaller arrangement to the family's home as well.
