In the early 1900s the Ocean Shore Railroad ran along the coast, and new towns grew around its stops. The railroad hired the architect Daniel Burnham to design El Granada as a seaside resort, with streets laid out in half circles. The post office recorded the town as El Granada in 1909, and the name stuck.
Moss Beach had its first hotel in 1881. During Prohibition, a cliffside restaurant there served as a speakeasy, and in 1969 the tide pools below became the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.
