Five towns that became one city
Fremont incorporated on January 23, 1956, when five towns, Centerville, Irvington, Mission San Jose, Niles and Warm Springs, joined to form one city.
The city is named for John C. Frémont, who led American forces in California in the 1840s.
With about 230,000 residents, Fremont is the Bay Area’s fourth-largest city. Mission San José, founded in 1797, and Mission Peak are two of its best-known landmarks.
