Orinda was named by Alice Marsh Cameron, probably for the poet Katherine Philips, who was known as the Matchless Orinda. The Orinda Park post office opened in 1888.
The first Caldecott Tunnel opened in 1937 and brought steady growth. The Orinda Theatre, a Streamline Moderne cinema, opened on December 27, 1941, and still shows films.
