The Island City

Alameda was founded on June 6, 1853, and incorporated on April 19, 1854. It became a true island when a tidal canal was finished in 1902.

Naval Air Station Alameda operated from 1940 to 1997. The base is now being redeveloped as Alameda Point.

The aircraft carrier USS Hornet, which recovered the Apollo 11 astronauts in 1969, opened as a museum here on October 17, 1998. About 78,000 people live in Alameda today.
