From Squatterville to a planned village
During the Gold Rush, settlers squatting on old Mexican land grants gave the town the nickname Squatterville. It was later renamed San Lorenzo, and its first post office opened in 1854.
In 1944 the David D. Bohannon Company began building San Lorenzo Village, one of the first planned communities in the United States, with land set aside for schools, churches, parks and shops.
San Lorenzo is unincorporated and governed by Alameda County. About 29,600 people live here today.
