Flowers that follow the national cemetery’s rules

Golden Gate National Cemetery is at 1300 Sneath Lane, San Bruno, CA 94066. The grounds are open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and closed on federal holidays except Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The office phone is (650) 589-7737.

Fresh cut flowers are welcome at gravesites all year. The cemetery does not allow vases, planters, glass or other decorative containers on graves, and items cannot be tied to headstones or trees. For a visit, choose a wrapped bouquet that can be laid at the headstone. We can deliver it to you or a family member to bring, so the flowers arrive fresh.

Artificial flowers are allowed from November 1 through March 1. Christmas wreaths and potted plants may be placed from December 10 and must be removed by January 10. Potted plants for Easter and Memorial Day may be placed five days before the holiday and removed five days after.

Cemetery staff remove fresh flowers on the first and third Wednesday of each month once they fade. If you visit right after a removal day, your flowers will stay at the grave longer.

For a committal service, flowers usually travel with the funeral home and the family. Give us the funeral home’s name and phone, the veteran’s full name and the service date and time, and we will deliver to the funeral home or the family in time.

To find a gravesite before you visit, use the Nationwide Gravesite Locator from the National Cemetery Administration or ask at the office. Sympathy flowers can also go to the family’s home. Give the family name, a phone number and any timing preferences.

A national cemetery for the Bay Area since 1941

Congress authorized a new national cemetery for the Bay Area in 1937, and the War Department named it Golden Gate National Cemetery in 1939. The first burials took place on June 2, 1941.

The land was once part of Rancho Buri Buri and later a farm. Works Progress Administration crews helped grade and landscape its rolling lawns in the early 1940s.

About 162 acres in size, the cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Medal of Honor recipients rest here, along with Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz and Admirals Raymond Spruance, Richmond K. Turner and Charles Lockwood in Section C.

When are flowers removed?

Cemetery staff remove faded fresh flowers on the first and third Wednesday of each month.
