A rancho named for a healing spring
José Joaquín Bernal, a retired soldier, founded Rancho Santa Teresa here in 1834. He named it for the healing waters of the Santa Teresa Spring, after Saint Teresa of Ávila.
The rancho became a center of Californio life in the southern Santa Clara Valley, and the Treaty of Santa Teresa was signed here in 1844.
In the 1950s, IBM’s Cottle Road campus pioneered hard disk drive manufacturing. The district is still home to tech campuses, along with about 56,000 residents.
