A county seat on the Carquinez Strait
Martinez is named for Ygnacio Martínez, whose Rancho El Pinole included the land. Col. William M. Smith laid out the town in 1849, and it became the county seat in 1850. Martinez incorporated on April 1, 1876.
Naturalist John Muir lived here from 1880 until his death in 1914. His 1883 home and the 1849 Martinez Adobe are part of the John Muir National Historic Site, established on August 31, 1964.
Amtrak trains stop downtown, and about 37,000 people live in Martinez today.
