The railroad reached Danville in 1891, and farms switched from wheat to fruit and nuts. John Hartz later laid out lots near the depot, and Hartz Avenue became the main street. Danville incorporated as a town on July 1, 1982.
Playwright Eugene O’Neill lived at Tao House above Danville from 1937 to 1944, where he wrote The Iceman Cometh and Long Day’s Journey into Night. It became a National Historic Site in 1976.
In 1975 Ken Behring bought 6,200 acres of Blackhawk Ranch. The first homes opened in 1979, and more than 2,000 acres went to Mount Diablo State Park.
