Flowers for Japantown and the Western Addition

Japantown centers on Post Street between Fillmore and Laguna streets, where the Japan Center malls hold restaurants, shops and the Kinokuniya bookstore. For a business inside a mall, enter the business name, the building and the street address, with the hours someone will be there.

Fillmore Street runs through the Western Addition with shops, restaurants and music venues. For a dinner or celebration, add the host’s name and the reservation time so staff can recognize the order.

Many homes are Victorian flats with a front stair and a separate bell for each unit. Include the unit, the name on the bell and the recipient’s phone, and tell us which door is used day to day.

For hospital deliveries, include the patient’s full name and room if you know it. Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center is at 2425 Geary Boulevard. Our hospital and care facility guide lists the details most facilities ask for.

Alamo Square is a favorite spot for picnics and photos. A park has no reception desk, so flowers for a gathering should go to a home or to a person who can meet the driver.

For sympathy flowers to a home, give the family name, a phone number and any timing preferences. For a service at a church, hall or funeral home, include the venue, the deceased’s full name, the service time and an onsite contact. Our funeral and sympathy flower guide explains timing for formal pieces.

A Japantown rebuilt after 1906, and the houses on Postcard Row

After the 1906 earthquake destroyed earlier Japanese neighborhoods in the city, Japanese immigrants moved to the Western Addition, which became San Francisco’s main Japantown.

The Japan Center opened in 1968. Its Peace Pagoda, a five-tiered concrete stupa designed by the Japanese architect Yoshiro Taniguchi, was a gift from Osaka, San Francisco’s sister city. In 2007, the stretch of Buchanan Street in Japantown was renamed Osaka Way. The Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival fills the neighborhood for two weekends every April.

On the east side of Alamo Square, the Victorian houses at 710 to 720 Steiner Street, often called Postcard Row, were built between 1892 and 1896 by the developer Matthew Kavanaugh.

Choose the flowers, then add the exact address, unit, cross street and phone number that make a handoff at a Victorian front stair or a busy shopping center easy. For businesses, schools and care settings, include the recipient’s name and the hours someone can receive them, so the arrangement is not left at a closed door.
