Adams Point takes its name from Edson Adams, one of Oakland’s early landowners. After the 1906 earthquake, the area served as a camp for people displaced from San Francisco, and many of them settled in Oakland for good.
Lake Merritt, along the neighborhood’s edge, was designated in 1870 as the first official wildlife refuge in the United States. Its Necklace of Lights was first lit in 1925 and restored in 1987.
Children’s Fairyland in Lakeside Park opened on September 2, 1950, as one of the country’s first themed amusement parks. Walt Disney visited it that year while planning Disneyland.
