Despite its name, Old Palo Alto is not the city’s oldest neighborhood. It grew in the early 1900s, when families built large homes on the land south of Embarcadero Road.
The Gamble house on Waverley Street was built in 1902 for the family of Edwin Percy Gamble, a son of a Procter & Gamble co-founder. His daughter Elizabeth lived there all her adult life and left the house and garden to the city when she died in 1981. It has been a free public garden since 1985.
Gamble Garden and Bowden Park sit at opposite corners of the neighborhood, and the Caltrain line runs along its western edge on Alma Street.
