Los Gatos takes its name from Rancho Rinconada de Los Gatos, an 1839 land grant whose name means the corner of the cats, after the mountain lions and bobcats of the foothills.
In the 1850s James Alexander Forbes built Forbes Mill, a flour mill on Los Gatos Creek. Its 1880 stone annex still stands at Church and East Main streets. Los Gatos incorporated on August 10, 1887.
Monte Sereno incorporated on May 14, 1957, to protect its semi-rural character. John Steinbeck lived on Greenwood Lane there, where he wrote The Grapes of Wrath.
