Neighborhood elementary and middle schools receive flowers through their main offices. Include the staff member’s full name and order early on event days.
Mitchell Park, just south of Midtown, has a library and community center at 3700 Middlefield Road. For an event there, include the room, the start time and an onsite contact.
The nearest hospitals are Stanford Hospital at 500 Pasteur Drive and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at 725 Welch Road, both beside Stanford Shopping Center. The heart of postwar Palo Alto
Much of Midtown was built in the years after World War II, when orchards gave way to streets of family homes.
Its shopping area on Middlefield Road became the everyday center of the neighborhood, with a grocery store, bank branches and local restaurants that residents can reach on foot or by bike.
Adobe Creek and Matadero Creek run through south Palo Alto, and Mitchell Park’s library and community center are a short ride away.
Eichler country
Postwar Palo Alto became one of the main proving grounds for builder Joseph Eichler. His company put up its first 63 homes in the city's Green Gables tract in 1950, designed by the architects Anshen and Allen, and Architectural Forum named it subdivision of the year. Eichler went on to build tract after tract in the flat land of south and central Palo Alto, and many of those single-story, post-and-beam houses still stand on Midtown's quieter streets.
Eichler homes often face the street with a garage and a mostly blank wall, while the main windows open onto a back garden. The front door can sit around the side of the carport or behind a gate into an atrium, so it is not always easy to spot from the curb. If that is true of the home you are sending to, tell us where the door is. Palo Alto still has roughly 2,700 Eichler homes, so a door hidden behind a carport or atrium gate is common in this part of town.
Greenmeadow
Just south of Midtown, Greenmeadow is a well-preserved example of these neighborhoods. Eichler Homes built its 243 houses in 1954 and 1955 from designs by A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons, with a community center of two buildings and a swimming pool for the residents. Its houses were among the first in the area with double garages, built-in kitchen appliances and indoor laundry rooms. Greenmeadow was added to the National Register of Historic Places in July 2005.
For a delivery to the Greenmeadow community center, include the event name, the start time and someone we can call when we arrive.
Mitchell Park Library
Mitchell Park Library first opened in 1958, paid for by a $700,000 bond that voters approved in 1956 for two new branches, Mitchell Park and Rinconada. It was expanded in the mid-1970s, and the branch was later rebuilt as a joint library and community center of about 56,000 square feet that reopened in 2014. For a staff member, include their full name and whether they work in the library or the community center.
Planning a Midtown delivery
Midtown streets are lined with mature trees, and a house number can be hidden by plants or a fence. A phone number for the recipient helps our driver find the right door.
Bryant Street, which runs through Midtown, became Palo Alto's first bicycle boulevard in 1982, one of the earliest in the country, and it remains one of the city's busiest bike routes. If the recipient may be out during the day, tell us a shaded spot near the door where the flowers can wait, or a neighbor who can take them in.
Deliveries run Monday through Saturday. For a birthday or anniversary that falls on a Sunday, choose Saturday. Your card message can be written in any language you like.
