California’s third capital

Benicia was founded on May 19, 1847, by Robert Semple, Thomas O. Larkin and Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, and named for Vallejo’s wife, Francisca Benicia Carrillo de Vallejo. It incorporated in March 1850.

The brick capitol, built in 1852, housed the state legislature from February 3, 1853, to February 24, 1854. It is now a state historic park at First and G Streets.

About 27,000 people live in Benicia today.

The Arsenal, the Clock Tower and the Camel Barns

For more than a century, Benicia was an Army town. Soldiers first occupied the Benicia Barracks on April 9, 1849. In 1851 the Army opened its first ordnance supply depot in the West there, and in 1852 it became the Benicia Arsenal. The sandstone Clock Tower went up in 1859 as a fortified storehouse with gunports facing the Carquinez Strait. After an accidental explosion in 1912, it was rebuilt with one tower instead of two, and the present clock was added. Over the years it has served as a chapel, a munitions depot and a National Guard armory, and today it is a community center that opens for scheduled events.

The Camel Barns, built in 1855, once stabled part of the Army's short-lived Camel Corps, which disbanded in 1863. They now house the Museum of History Benicia. The Arsenal closed in 1964, and its old warehouses became studios and workspaces for artists, artisans and small businesses. For a delivery to the Clock Tower or the museum, send the event name and start time, and someone who can let our driver in.

St. Paul's, St. Dominic's and Benicia weddings

St. Paul's Episcopal Church, at First and J Streets, was designed in 1859 by Lt. Julian McAllister and built by shipwrights from the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. Bishop William Ingraham Kip consecrated it in 1860, and it is a California Historical Landmark. St. Dominic's is Benicia's Catholic church, and every year the Portuguese community's Holy Ghost parade walks to St. Dominic's for Mass.

Between these churches, the Clock Tower and the restaurants along First Street, Benicia hosts plenty of weddings and receptions. For altar arrangements, bouquets or reception centerpieces, give us the venue, the ceremony time and the coordinator's phone number. We will plan on the morning route.

First Street, the Peddlers Fair and the Fourth

Benicia's antique shops started the Peddlers Fair in 1963 by setting out tables near St. Paul's Church. It has since grown into one of the largest street fairs in Northern California. Around July 3 each year, the Fourth of July parade runs down First Street with floats, horses, bands and dancing. On those days, parking near First Street fills early and some blocks close, so we time deliveries around the event and may call the recipient to meet us a block or two away.

Jack London lived in Benicia as a young man, working the local fishing boats and starting to write. First Street's older buildings still face the water near the old ferry landing. From 1879 until the railroad bridge opened in 1930, the ferries Solano and Contra Costa carried entire trains across the strait to Port Costa here.

The waterfront and Benicia State Recreation Area

About two miles west of downtown, Benicia State Recreation Area covers 447 acres at the narrowest part of the Carquinez Strait. Most of it is the Southampton Bay Wetland Natural Preserve, a tidal marsh where the river water meets San Pablo Bay. Its paved trails are part of the Bay Trail and the Ridge Trail, and the park borders Vallejo's Glen Cove neighborhood. Homes along the hills and the waterfront near the park and the Benicia–Martinez Bridge often have steep driveways or shared entrances. A gate code or a note on which door to use helps our driver get the flowers inside quickly.
