Kensington’s Hillside History
Kensington is an unincorporated Contra Costa County community built along Arlington Avenue and the western slope of the Berkeley Hills. Much of its residential character took shape in the first half of the twentieth century. One of its defining landscapes is Blake Garden: UC Berkeley records that Anson and Anita Blake and landscape-architecture pioneer Mabel Symmes began transforming the rugged hillside property in 1922. The Blakes deeded the house and garden to the University of California in 1957, and the property passed to the university in 1962. Today the garden remains a teaching and research laboratory for UC Berkeley’s Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning.
