A landing that became a town

Scottish immigrant James Ross bought Rancho Punta de Quentin in 1857 and set up a trading post called Ross Landing.

Ross incorporated on August 21, 1908. The Marin Art and Garden Center and Ross Common are at the heart of town.

Ross is one of the smallest towns in Marin, with about 2,300 residents.

Ross Common, the bridges and the Bear

A lot of what people love about Ross was settled in its first few years as a town. In 1909, right after incorporation, the council hired John Buck Leonard to build five reinforced concrete bridges over the creek, and they are now eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Two years later Annie Ross Worn, the founder's daughter, gave the land for Ross Common. The council also made it illegal to cut down a tree without the town's approval, which is why so many streets here still sit under a full canopy of trees.

Town Hall and the fire station went up in 1927 on the old Shotwell estate. Out front stands the Ross Bear, a marble-dust sculpture by Beniamino Bufano that Jerome and Peggy Flax donated in 1971. It has been the town's symbol ever since, and it makes an easy landmark if you are giving a driver directions to the Common.

Weddings and events at the Marin Art and Garden Center

The Marin Art and Garden Center was founded in 1943 on land bought from A.J. Kittle, who served on the first Ross Town Council. Its gardens host weddings, memorials, classes and garden events through most of the year, and the Ross Valley Players stage their shows at the Barn Theatre on the grounds. The long serpentine brick wall near the entrance honors Caroline Livermore, one of the Center's founders.

For anything at the Center, send us the event name, the building or garden area, the start time and the phone number of someone who will be there. Opening night flowers for a cast member work the same way: give us the performer's name and the show date, and we will have the flowers there before curtain.

Churches and schools in Ross

St. Anselm Church was dedicated in 1908, the same year Ross became a town, and St. John's Episcopal Church has stood on land donated by Sarah Coffin since 1911. We deliver altar arrangements, sympathy pieces and wedding flowers to both. The Branson School moved to Ross from San Rafael in 1922 and is now a high school of about 320 students. Around Phoenix Lake and the Lagunitas area

West of Ross Common, Lagunitas Road climbs toward Natalie Coffin Greene Park, the 25 acres the Greene family gave the town in 1967 at the edge of Phoenix Lake. Many homes on Lagunitas, Upper Road and the streets above them sit well back from the road under heavy tree cover. A gate code, a side-door note or a neighbor's name saves our driver a lot of time on these streets.
