Cherryland grew from the orchards of William Meek, who settled in Alameda County in 1859 and farmed about 2,200 acres here.
Meek built his Second Empire mansion in 1869. It sits at 240 Hampton Road and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
In 1911 Meek’s heirs began selling lots in a subdivision called Cherryland. About 15,800 people live here today.
