The place of little cornfields

Milpitas takes its name from the Spanish for little cornfields, from the Nahuatl word milpa. The José María Alviso Adobe at 92 Piedmont Road is the oldest continuously occupied adobe from California’s Mexican period. The city bought it in 1995.

Milpitas incorporated on January 26, 1954, and grew from about 800 people in 1950 to more than 80,000 today.

The Great Mall opened in 1994 on the site of the former Ford assembly plant, and BART reached Milpitas on June 13, 2020.

The Ford plant that changed a farm town

Ford's San Jose Assembly Plant opened in Milpitas on May 17, 1955, replacing the company's older factory in Richmond. The plant covered about 1.4 million square feet, and at its peak nearly 6,000 people worked there, turning out about 55 cars and 22 trucks an hour. It was one of only three Ford plants that built the Mustang, and Falcons, Pintos and F-Series trucks rolled off its lines as well. Ford closed the plant on May 20, 1983, citing competition from Japanese imports.

Ford's arrival turned a small farm town into a growing city. The plant also built Galaxies, Mavericks, Torinos and Mercury Cougars over the years. For a retirement party or a reunion of former plant workers, give us the venue, the start time and a contact on site.

Sunnyhills and Ben Gross

In 1956 the Sunnyhills neighborhood opened, built with help from the Ford workers' union and support from Quaker groups. It was one of the first integrated neighborhoods in the country, open to Black and white families alike. Union member Ben Gross helped find the land for it, and he was later elected mayor of Milpitas, one of the first African Americans to lead a California city.

For a birthday or a get-well bouquet to a home in Sunnyhills or anywhere in Milpitas, add the recipient's phone number in case no one answers the door.

Ohlone villages, ranchos and an old school

The Tamien people, a group of the Ohlone, lived here first, and some of their villages stood where Higuera Adobe Park is today. During the Mexican period, José María Alviso received Rancho Milpitas, about 4,458 acres, and Ignacio Alviso received the neighboring Rancho Rincón de los Esteros, about 6,353 acres. Around 1970 the worn walls of the Higuera Adobe were wrapped in a brick shell to protect them.

The Milpitas Public Library now fills the old Milpitas Grammar School building, where students went to class from 1912 to 1956. In 1968 voters combined the city's schools into the Milpitas Unified School District. For a teacher or librarian, include the school or library name, the person's full name and the hours they work.

From the bay to the eastern hills

Milpitas covers about 13.5 square miles. Most of the city sits only about 20 feet above sea level, but the land climbs to a 1,289-foot peak in the eastern foothills. Ed R. Levin County Park spreads across those hills, and Monument Peak holds the antennas for two local TV stations. Three VTA light rail stations on the Orange Line serve the city. Calaveras Boulevard crosses six railroad tracks on an overpass built in the 1960s, and the city has 17 neighborhood parks, most between 3 and 10 acres. For a party in one of those parks, give us the park name, the picnic area and a phone number for someone there.

About 71 percent of Milpitas residents are Asian American. Your card message can be written in any language you like. Type it exactly as you want it to appear, and order by 1:00 PM Pacific Time for same-day delivery.
