Westlake was built by Henry Doelger, a San Francisco home builder who bought about 600 acres of sand dunes and farmland south of the city. The area was annexed to Daly City in 1948.
Its rows of similar homes drew national attention. In the 1950s, magazines praised its new schools, and Westlake later inspired Malvina Reynolds’ 1962 song “Little Boxes.”
Today Westlake is a diverse neighborhood, and its postwar homes remain a well-known piece of Bay Area architecture.
