A rancho, a college and a town

Moraga is named for Joaquín Moraga, who shared the 1835 Rancho Laguna de los Palos Colorados with his cousin Juan Bernal.

Saint Mary’s College moved to Moraga in 1928. The first building at Hacienda de las Flores went up in 1917, and industrialist Donald Rheem bought the estate in 1934.

Moraga incorporated on November 13, 1974, and bought the Hacienda for the community. About 16,900 people live here today.
