Discovery Bay began as a planned community in 1964 on farmland known as the Byron Tract. It was first called Riverside and River Lake, and the name Discovery Bay was adopted in 1968.
Builders dug man-made waterways so that many homes have private docks with access to the Delta. A golf course fills the southeast part of the community.
Discovery Bay is unincorporated, with a community services district. About 15,000 people live here today.
Before the first homes went in, the Byron Tract was farmland, planted in barley and potatoes. Building started in 1964, and the early names for the project were Riverside and River Lake. In 1968 Jurgen Lunding led the push for the name Discovery Bay, and it stuck. The community first showed up in the census in 1980 with 1,326 residents. By 2020 the count was 15,358.
The town is built around man-made waterways and residential islands, and Reclamation District 800 maintains about 19 miles of levees that protect it from the Delta. Many streets curve around the water and end in cul-de-sacs, so two homes a few hundred feet apart by boat can be a longer drive apart by car. For years Discovery Bay shared the 94514 ZIP code with Byron. In July 2007 the town got its own, 94505, which still makes a difference for deliveries: entering the correct ZIP code at checkout keeps your order on the right route. Most homes here have a private dock with access to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Every December, the Discovery Bay Yacht Club hosts a lighted boat parade open to the whole community. Dinghies, ski boats and yachts decorated with lights cruise past the waterfront homes.
