A rancho, a pioneer and a reservoir
The land was part of Rancho Acalanes, a Mexican land grant from 1834. Elam Brown arrived from Missouri in 1846 and bought the rancho in 1848.
The town was named for the Marquis de Lafayette, and a post office opened on March 2, 1857. Lafayette incorporated on July 29, 1968.
Lafayette Reservoir was built in 1933 and opened for recreation in 1966, with a paved 2.7-mile path around the water. About 25,000 people live in Lafayette today.
