From rancho to hillside community
Castro Valley is named for Guillermo Castro, a Californio rancher who received the Rancho San Lorenzo land grant in 1840.
The dam that formed Lake Chabot was built in 1874 and 1875 as a water supply for the East Bay. Castro Valley Boulevard was once part of the Lincoln Highway.
In the 1940s and 1950s Castro Valley was known for its chicken ranches. Today it is an unincorporated community of about 66,000 people.
