Benjamin Campbell bought land here in 1851 and planted hay and grain. After he sold land to the railroad in 1878, a town grew up around fruit packing and drying.
The Campbell Fruit Growers’ Union became a well-known cooperative, and the J.C. Ainsley Packing Company shipped its canned fruit as far as England.
Campbell incorporated as a city in 1952. The 1925 Ainsley House was moved to 300 Grant Street in 1990 and is now open to the public as a museum.
