The town began as a farming settlement in the 1840s and was first known as San Benito, then Spanishtown. It took the name Half Moon Bay, after the crescent-shaped bay, in 1874, and incorporated as a city on July 15, 1959.
Farming still shapes the area, with pumpkin patches, Christmas tree farms and fields along the coast. In 1971 a downtown committee started the Art and Pumpkin Festival to bring visitors to Main Street.
Each October, growers from across the country bring giant pumpkins to the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off here. The 2023 winner weighed 2,749 pounds.
