Japantown began in the 1890s as boardinghouses for Japanese workers who came to farm the valley’s orchards.
The San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin was founded in 1902, and its current temple was completed in 1937.
During World War II, Japanese American families from San Jose were forced into incarceration camps. Many came back to rebuild, and the Japanese American Museum of San Jose now tells their story. With San Francisco and Los Angeles, this is one of only three Japantowns left in the United States.
