Flowers for Visitacion Valley

Leland Avenue is the neighborhood’s main street, with small shops, restaurants and services between Bayshore Boulevard and the library. For a business delivery, enter the business name with the street address and the hours someone will be there.

The Visitacion Valley Branch of the San Francisco Public Library is at 201 Leland Avenue, at the corner of Rutland Street. For a staff celebration or a thank-you, include the recipient’s full name and the hours they work.

Schools receive flowers through the main office. Visitacion Valley Elementary School is at 55 Schwerin Street. Include the staff member’s full name and order early on days with performances, graduations or end-of-year events.

Many homes here sit on sloping streets, with the living space above a garage and a stair to the door. Include the unit, bell or gate details and the recipient’s phone, and tell us which entrance is used day to day. Newer townhomes and apartment buildings near Bayshore Boulevard often have a lobby or call box, so give the building name and unit as well.

McLaren Park borders the neighborhood to the west and is popular for birthdays and family gatherings. A park has no reception desk, so flowers should go to a home or to a person who can meet the driver with a phone number and meeting point.

For hospital and care deliveries, include the patient’s or resident’s full name and room or unit if you know it. Our hospital and care facility guide lists the details most facilities ask for.

For sympathy flowers to a home, give the family name, a phone number and any timing preferences. For a service at a church or hall, include the venue, the deceased’s full name, the service time and an onsite contact. The Colma cemeteries are a short drive south. Our funeral and sympathy flower guide explains timing for formal pieces.

A valley named in 1777 and a neighborhood built around a lock factory

In 1777, Spanish travelers on their way to the Presidio stopped in the valley between San Bruno Mountain and today’s McLaren Park to mark the Catholic feast of the Visitation. The name Visitacion stayed with the valley.

For much of the twentieth century, the Schlage Lock factory, built in 1926, was the neighborhood’s largest employer. The plant closed in 1999, and the site is being rebuilt with new homes and parks.

The Visitacion Valley Branch Library began in 1934 as a small collection and opened in its current building on Leland Avenue on July 30, 2011. The annual Visitacion Valley Festival on Leland Avenue began in 2006.
