A river town and the egg capital

Petaluma takes its name from a Coast Miwok village. In 1834 Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo received Rancho Petaluma, and his Petaluma Adobe was built in 1836. The city incorporated on April 12, 1858.

Petaluma became known as the Egg Capital of the World after Lyman Byce invented an egg incubator here in 1879.

The downtown historic district, with its iron-front buildings from the late 1800s, is on the National Register of Historic Places. About 60,000 people live in Petaluma today.
