In 1849 twin brothers William and Joseph Smith founded Smith’s Landing on the river. At a Fourth of July picnic in 1851, residents renamed the town Antioch after the biblical city.
Antioch incorporated on February 6, 1872. The El Campanil Theatre opened on November 1, 1928, and the Antioch BART station opened in May 2018.
