Flowers for Sausalito homes, houseboats and businesses

Bridgeway is Sausalito’s main street, lined with restaurants, galleries and shops. For a business delivery, enter the business name with the street address and the hours someone will be there.

More than 400 houseboats line the north end of town. For a houseboat, include the harbor or dock name, the berth or slip number and the recipient’s phone.

Many homes sit on steep streets and stairways above the water. Include any gate code, the recipient’s phone and short directions if the house is hard to find.

Offices and studios near the old Marinship area receive many deliveries. For an office delivery, include the company name, the building, the floor and the recipient’s full name. Most office buildings route deliveries through a lobby desk.

The nearest hospital is MarinHealth Medical Center at 250 Bon Air Road in Greenbrae. Include the patient’s full name and room number if you know it. Our hospital and care facility guide lists the details most hospitals ask for.

For sympathy flowers to a home, give the family name, a phone number and any timing preferences. For a service, include the venue, the deceased’s full name, the service time and an onsite contact. Our funeral and sympathy flower guide explains timing for formal pieces.

A waterfront town with a shipbuilding past

Sausalito’s name comes from the Spanish for a small willow grove. The town incorporated on September 4, 1893.

During World War II the Marinship yard built ships on the Sausalito waterfront. Today the Bay Model visitor center stands on the old shipyard site.

Passenger ferries connect downtown Sausalito with San Francisco. About 7,300 people live in Sausalito.

Marinship and the wartime waterfront

In 1942, Bechtel opened the Marinship yard on the Sausalito shoreline to build ships for the war. At its peak about 20,000 people worked there, and many lived in housing built for them in nearby Marin City. In three and a half years the yard turned out 93 ships, including 15 Liberty ships, 62 T2 tankers and 16 fleet oilers. The yard closed after the war, and today offices, studios and marine businesses fill much of the old site.

Some businesses in the old Marinship area share large buildings with more than one entrance. Give us the company name, the building and suite number, and a phone number, and our driver will find the right door.

The Bay Model

In 1956 and 1957, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a working hydraulic model of San Francisco Bay and the Delta inside a former wartime shipyard warehouse. Congress paid for it to test the Reber Plan, a proposal to dam the Bay and fill in thousands of acres of it. The model showed the plan would not work, and for decades afterward engineers used it to study tides, currents and changes to the Bay. It covers about 1.5 acres. Since 2000 it has served as an education center, open free to the public Tuesday through Saturday.

Houseboats, Waldo Point and the Dock of the Bay

Sausalito's floating homes got their start after the shipyards closed, when people began living on boats that had been left behind. The so-called Houseboat Wars of the 1970s and 1980s led to new regulations, and several harbor communities remain today, including Waldo Point Harbor, Galilee Harbor and the Gates Cooperative. In 1967 Otis Redding wrote "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" while staying on a houseboat at Waldo Point.

Docks can be locked and walkways long. Always add the dock or gate name and a phone number, and if the recipient can meet our driver at the top of the dock, the flowers will arrive in perfect shape.

Bridgeway, the Woman's Club and Sausalito celebrations

Bridgeway is Sausalito's main street, lined with restaurants and shops along the water. The Golden Gate Bridge opened in May 1937, and car ferries stopped in 1941, but passenger ferries still run from downtown to the San Francisco Ferry Building and Pier 39. For a delivery downtown, add the business name and hours, since parking along Bridgeway is tight on busy days. For a hotel guest, include the guest's full name and check-in date so the front desk can hold the flowers.

Fort Baker, just south of town, housed large numbers of troops during World War II. Closer to downtown, the Spinnaker restaurant on the water appears in the 1972 film Play It Again, Sam.

Up the hill at 120 Central Avenue, the Sausalito Woman's Club meets in a clubhouse designed by Julia Morgan and finished in 1918. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. For an event there or at any hillside venue, give us the start time and a contact. For a funeral or memorial, send the service time, the church or funeral home and a family contact, and formal pieces will go out on our early route.
