Flowers for the Inner Sunset

Irving Street, from about 5th to 12th Avenue, and 9th Avenue form the neighborhood’s shopping and dining center. For a business delivery, enter the business name with the street address and the hours someone will be there.

UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights is at 505 Parnassus Avenue. For a patient, include their full name and room if you know it, and check that flowers are allowed on their unit. Many UCSF staff work in offices and labs on the campus, so give the building, floor and a phone number for workplace deliveries. Our hospital and care facility guide lists the details most facilities ask for.

Most homes are row houses and flats with the living space above a garage. Include the unit, the name on the bell and the recipient’s phone, and tell us which door is used day to day.

Golden Gate Park borders the neighborhood to the north and is a favorite place for birthdays and picnics. A park has no reception desk, so flowers for a gathering should go to a home or to a person who can meet the driver at a clear meeting point.

Fog often settles over the Sunset in the afternoon. A compact arrangement in a sturdy container holds up well if it has to wait at a door. Tell us if the recipient is often away so we can plan the handoff.

For sympathy flowers to a home, give the family name, a phone number and any timing preferences. For a service at a church, hall or funeral home, include the venue, the deceased’s full name, the service time and an onsite contact. Our funeral and sympathy flower guide explains timing for formal pieces.

From sand dunes to a neighborhood by the park

The Sunset was once part of the Outside Lands, a stretch of sand dunes west of the city. Homes spread across the dunes after the 1906 earthquake, and the Inner Sunset grew beside Golden Gate Park and the medical campus on Parnassus.

The district’s name is often traced to the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition in Golden Gate Park, which promoted the area as the Sunset City.

On Moraga Street between 15th and 16th avenues, the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps climb 163 steps covered in a mosaic designed by Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher. Neighbors started the project in 2003, and the steps opened in 2005.
