From West Pittsburg to Bay Point

The area was first called Bella Vista and was later known as West Pittsburg. In 1993 residents voted to take the name Bay Point, reviving an older local name.

Ambrose Park was given to the community in 1947, and its Ambrose Aquatic Center opened in 2016.

Bay Point is unincorporated and governed by Contra Costa County. About 24,000 people live here today.

The first Bay Point and Port Chicago

The name Bay Point goes back more than a century. The Bay Point Land Company laid out a town under that name on the shore of Suisun Bay, near today's community. In 1931, as the Depression deepened, local businessman Walter Van Winkle pushed to rename it Port Chicago, after the city in Illinois. On July 17, 1944, two ships loading ammunition at the Port Chicago Naval Magazine exploded. The blast killed 320 sailors and civilians and injured 390 more, and most of the dead and injured were African American enlisted men. It was the worst home-front disaster of World War II.

In 1968 the federal government bought the whole town of Port Chicago and tore it down to create a safety zone around the Navy's loading docks. When residents of West Pittsburg voted for a new name in 1993, they chose Bay Point, bringing the old town's first name back to the shore.

Remembering the Port Chicago 320

The Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial, run by the National Park Service, marks the site of the explosion. Visits are by advance reservation only, through the park's tour program, and the Park Service holds an annual Port Chicago Commemoration.
