Flowers for West Portal and St. Francis Wood

West Portal Avenue is the neighborhood’s main street, lined with restaurants, cafés, small shops and services between the station and Ulloa Street. For a business delivery, enter the business name with the street address and the hours someone will be there. Muni streetcars share the avenue, so a clear address and a phone number help the driver make a quick, safe stop.

The West Portal Branch of the San Francisco Public Library is at 190 Lenox Way, a short walk from the avenue. For a staff celebration or a thank-you to a librarian, include the recipient’s full name and the hours they work.

Schools receive flowers through the main office. West Portal Elementary School is at 5 Lenox Way, and St. Cecilia School is at 660 Vicente Street. Include the staff member’s full name and order early on days with performances, graduations or end-of-year events.

St. Francis Wood is a residential park south of the avenue, with curving streets and homes set behind lawns, gardens and front steps. Many homes have a gate or a long walk to the door. Include any gate details, the recipient’s phone and which entrance is used day to day.

For hospital and care deliveries, include the patient’s or resident’s full name and room or unit if you know it. Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center is nearby at 375 Laguna Honda Boulevard. Our hospital and care facility guide lists the details most facilities ask for.

For sympathy flowers to a home, give the family name, a phone number and any timing preferences. Saint Cecilia Catholic Church is nearby at 2555 17th Avenue. For a service there or at another church or hall, include the venue, the deceased’s full name, the service time and an onsite contact. Our funeral and sympathy flower guide explains timing for formal pieces.

Fog often settles over this side of the city in the afternoon, and wind can pick up near the hills. A compact arrangement in a sturdy container holds up well if it has to wait at a door. Tell us if the recipient is often away so we can plan the handoff.

A neighborhood built around a tunnel, and a planned residence park

West Portal takes its name from the western entrance of the Twin Peaks Tunnel. The streetcar tunnel opened in 1918 and linked the lands west of Twin Peaks to downtown, which opened the area to new homes. West Portal Avenue grew into the shopping street for the surrounding neighborhoods.

St. Francis Wood was founded in 1912 by the Mason-McDuffie Company as a planned residence park. Its street plan was designed by the Olmsted Brothers, with curving streets that follow the hillside.

The neighborhood’s entrance portals were designed by the architect John Galen Howard, and its fountain and plaza by Henry Gutterson. These features still mark the way into St. Francis Wood today.
