Nob Hill became closely associated with the railroad and silver fortunes of nineteenth-century California. Mansions built by prominent families occupied the crest near California Street, where elevation and cable-car access made the hill a prestigious address.
The 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed many Nob Hill residences. The stone walls of the Flood mansion survived and later became the Pacific-Union Club, while hotels and apartment buildings reshaped the summit during reconstruction.
Grace Cathedral traces its history to an earlier Episcopal parish destroyed in 1906. Construction of the present cathedral began in 1928, and the building developed over decades into the California Street landmark recognized today.
Russian Hill received its name after early settlers found graves believed to belong to Russian sailors or fur traders. The name endured as streets and houses climbed the steep ground north of Nob Hill.
Lombard Street’s famous crooked block was created in 1922 to reduce the grade for vehicles between Hyde and Leavenworth streets. Its tight turns, gardens and views now draw heavy pedestrian traffic, making precise access instructions valuable.
Polk Street and the cable-car lines connect these hill neighborhoods to surrounding districts. Historic transportation shaped development, and modern deliveries still work around tracks, slopes, buses, hotel loading zones and residential steps.
