From stagecoach stop to Silicon Valley
Mountain View began in 1852 as a stagecoach stop, named for its view of the Santa Cruz Mountains. It grew into a farm town and incorporated on November 7, 1902.
In 1956 Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory opened here and began the work on silicon that gave Silicon Valley its name.
Today the city is home to the Googleplex, Shoreline Amphitheatre, the Computer History Museum and NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field.
