A railroad town and a silent film studio
The Central Pacific Railroad opened its Niles station in April 1870, and the town grew where the railroad left Niles Canyon.
In 1913 the Essanay Film Manufacturing Company built a studio in Niles, led by co-founder Gilbert “Broncho Billy” Anderson. Charlie Chaplin made The Champion and The Tramp here in 1915.
The Edison Theater, also built in 1913, is now the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum. Today the Niles Canyon Railway runs excursion trains through the canyon.
