A sugar town on the strait
Thomas Edwards Sr. bought land here in 1866 from Judge Joseph B. Crockett, for whom the town is named. The Crockettville post office opened in 1883, and the name was later shortened.
In 1906 a sugar refinery opened on the waterfront, and by the 1920s it employed about 95 percent of the town’s residents.
Crockett is unincorporated. About 3,200 people live here today.
C&H and the life of Sugar Town
For more than a century, the sugar refinery on the waterfront has defined Crockett. In 1906 a cooperative of Hawaiian sugar cane growers bought an old beet sugar factory here, and it became the California and Hawaiian Sugar Company, known everywhere as C&H. Before World War II the plant employed about 2,500 people, and Crockett grew up as a company town, sometimes called Sugar Town. Ownership changed several times after 1993, and American Sugar Refining bought C&H in 2006. The last shipment of Hawaiian sugar arrived on January 17, 2017. Today the refinery processes raw sugar from countries such as Australia, the Philippines and Nicaragua.
For a delivery to an office at the refinery, give us the employee's full name, the department and a phone number, since packages and flowers usually go through a front desk or security.
The Carquinez Bridges and Al Zampa
The first Carquinez Bridge, a steel cantilever span, opened on May 21, 1927, and a second span opened beside it in November 1958. The original span was replaced by the Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge, a suspension bridge that opened to traffic on November 11, 2003. It is named for Al Zampa, an ironworker who worked on the 1927 Carquinez span and on the Golden Gate Bridge.
Interstate 80 runs right past town, so most of our Crockett deliveries come straight off the freeway. The streets that climb the hills from Pomona Street are steep and narrow, and parking can be tight. A note on which door to use, or a phone number our driver can call from the curb, helps a lot here.
The Old Homestead and the Crockett Museum
Thomas Edwards Sr. built his home here in 1867, a year after he bought the land from Judge Crockett. That house, now called the Old Homestead, is a California Historical Landmark. The former Southern Pacific depot at 900 Loring Avenue houses the Crockett Museum, run by the Crockett Historical Society. Its collection covers the sugar industry, the bridges, local schools, churches and clubs, and the men and women from Crockett who served in the military. It also has back issues of the Crockett Signal and the refinery's own newsletter, the Cubelet Press.
The museum has been temporarily closed, so check with the society before sending flowers for an event there. For a gathering at a Crockett club or hall, send the hall name, the start time and a contact who will be there early to receive the delivery.
Crockett Hills, the shoreline and Crockett families
Above town, Crockett Hills Regional Park covers 1,939 acres and carries a 4.5-mile piece of the Bay Area Ridge Trail. Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline adds another 1,415 acres of open space along the water. Homes near the trailheads and at the ends of the hillside streets can be hard to find, so a cross street helps.
For graduations at John Swett High School, order a day or two early and tell us whether the flowers go to the school, the ceremony venue or the family home. For a funeral or memorial, tell us the service time, the church or funeral home and the family name. Formal pieces like standing sprays and casket flowers go out on the early route, and a planter or vase arrangement for the family can follow later that day.
