Flowers for Potrero Hill and Dogpatch
Potrero Hill rises steeply from the flats, and many homes sit above a garage or at the top of an outside stair. Include the unit, bell, gate code and recipient phone, and tell us which entrance is used day to day. On the steepest blocks, a driver may call ahead so the arrangement can be handed over instead of left on a sloped step.
18th Street is the hill’s main shopping and dining street. For a café, restaurant or shop, enter the business name with the street address and the hours someone will be there. For a dinner reservation, add the host name and seating time so staff can recognize the order.
Dogpatch, east of Interstate 280, mixes restored workers’ cottages with lofts, studios and newer apartment buildings along Third Street. Large buildings often have a lobby, package room or call box. Give the building name, unit and the recipient’s phone so the flowers reach a person rather than a mail room.
The Potrero Branch of the San Francisco Public Library is at 1616 20th Street, and the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House is at 953 De Haro Street. For a staff celebration or an event, include the recipient’s name and the room or desk where the flowers should go.
Schools receive flowers through the main office. Daniel Webster Elementary School is at 465 Missouri Street and Starr King Elementary School is at 1215 Carolina Street. Include the staff member’s full name and order early on days with performances or graduations.
For hospital deliveries, include the patient’s full name and room if you know it. Zuckerberg San Francisco General is nearby at 1001 Potrero Avenue, just west of the hill, and UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay is nearby at 1975 Fourth Street. Our hospital and care facility guide lists the details most facilities ask for.
The Potrero Hill Recreation Center and the neighborhood’s small parks are popular for birthdays and gatherings. Parks have no reception desk, so flowers should go to a home or to a person who can meet the driver with a phone number and meeting point.
For sympathy flowers to a home, give the family name, a phone number and any timing preferences. For a service at a church or hall, include the venue, the deceased’s full name, the service time and an onsite contact. Our funeral and sympathy flower guide explains timing for formal pieces.
Wind off the bay can be strong on the hilltop and along the Dogpatch waterfront. A compact arrangement in a sturdy container holds up better than a tall, open design if it has to wait at a door. Tell us if the recipient is often away so we can plan the handoff.

From mission pasture to a hill of homes and a historic shipyard district
Potrero means pasture in Spanish. In the late 1700s, the land east of Mission Dolores was used for grazing and became known as the Potrero Nuevo, the new pasture. The name stayed with the hill as the city grew south and east.
The Potrero Hill Neighborhood House at 953 De Haro Street serves a community organization founded in 1907 to help immigrant families and earthquake survivors. Its building, designed by Julia Morgan, was completed in 1922 and is San Francisco Landmark No. 86.
Dogpatch grew as housing for the workers of the nearby shipyards and industries along the Central Waterfront. The neighborhood’s Irving M. Scott School, built in 1895, is the oldest surviving schoolhouse in San Francisco. The city designated the Dogpatch Landmark District in 2003 to protect its workers’ cottages and early buildings.
The Potrero Branch Library on 20th Street has been home to the annual Potrero Hill Artists’ Exhibition since 1955, a long-running tradition that reflects the hill’s community of artists and makers.

Plan a thoughtful neighborhood delivery
Choose the flowers, then add the exact address, unit, cross street and phone number that make a hillside or loft handoff easy. For businesses, schools and care settings, include the recipient’s name and the hours someone can receive them, so the arrangement is protected from stairs, locked lobbies and changing curb conditions.
